A substantial proportion of people with Severe Mental Illness/Common Mental Disorders continue to have significant problems with social and personal functioning many years after diagnosis. It is seen that despite optimum treatment around 20% of service users presenting with a psychotic illness will go on to require rehabilitation services due to the severity of their functional impairment and symptoms. Their problems place them at risk of social isolation, self-neglect, relapse into acute illness, inability to cope and exploitation in community settings. Thus, Paul Merchants in association with Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh and NGO Parivartan have started project “RAHAT” that focuses on identifying and providing support service to people suffering with mental health problems and associated needs so that they can live successfully in the community.
